Hartsbourne falls at the final hurdle
Hartsbourne’s phenomenal run in 2017’s HGU Team Cup came up one stop short as the team lost 3-1 against Brookman’s Park in last Sunday’s final, played at a splendid Hadley Wood Golf Club. It was the first time a men’s team from the club had ever made it to the final of a county competition.
Run by the Hertfordshire Golf Union and contested by 28 clubs, the Team Cup is for Category B (6-12 handicap) and Category C (13-20 handicap) players, in a better ball matchplay format with two pairings from each category.
Sporting specially designed for the HGU Team Cup final and limited edition club shirts, team captain Graham Goodkind and Damon Statt lost 2&1 as did Mark Posniak and Nimrod Schwarzmann, while Sam Phillips and Marc Diamond were defeated 3&1. The pairing of Jon Shapiro and Tony Hyams routed their opponents 6&5 to salvage a chunk of respectability for the boys from Bushey.
Graham said: “Credit where credit’s due to Brookman’s Park, they played very well on the day and won their matches rather than us losing them. I’m tremendously proud of the team plus the other squad members who contributed en route to the final. There was fantastic Hartsbourne camaraderie and team spirit throughout this year’s competition. And we played some outstanding golf too. For us to make it to a county final in only our second season of being involved is a great achievement. Although all of us were feeling pretty gutted after the match, we vowed to go one step further in 2018."
The other squad players involved this year but not in Sunday’s team were Jonathan Shapiro, Andrew Bloom, Jeremy Derman and Michael Mirelman.
